What to pack for a phinisi voyage

A curated wardrobe that moves from sun-drenched deck to starlit dinner, from coral reef to temple — light, practical and respectful of local custom.

The packing list

Six things to get right

Around 28°C year-round with 70–90% humidity: pack for breathability, sun and water.

Climate

Breathable fabrics

Linen, cotton and bamboo by day; moisture-wicking blends for active days. If it feels heavy in your hand, it will feel heavy on you.

Sun

Serious sun protection

UPF-rated long sleeves, a wide-brimmed hat, UV sunglasses and reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen, reapplied after every swim.

Water

Reef and water gear

Several quick-drying swimsuits, a UPF 50+ rash guard, reef booties, your own mask and snorkel, and a dry bag.

Land

Trekking kit

Grippy sandals for island hopping, broken-in trail shoes for Komodo hikes, a small waterproof daypack and a compact rain shell.

Evening

Sundowners and supper

Silk or linen maxi dresses and chic separates; linen trousers, collared shirts and loafers or boat shoes. Ties are rarely needed.

Health

Health and wellness

DEET or picaridin repellent, a first-aid kit, ample prescriptions, electrolyte tablets and a reusable bottle — at least three litres a day.

Respectful dress for sacred spaces
Cultural respect

Respectful dress for sacred spaces

At temples, mosques and villages, cover shoulders and knees. A lightweight sarong or scarf slips over shorts and comes off again afterwards.

Choose slip-on sandals — you will often remove shoes before entering homes or places of worship — and ask about dress codes for each excursion.

Pack for every moment

Deck, reef, trail and supper

Snorkeller over a coral garden
Komodo dragon on the beach
Padar Island viewpoint over three bays
Paddleboarders on a calm sea
Manta ray gliding through clear water
Sundeck day beds under a parasol
Pink Beach in Komodo National Park
Phinisi silhouettes at sunset
Charged, protected and connected
Technology & connectivity

Charged, protected and connected

Bring adapters for Type C and F sockets (220V, 50Hz), power banks, a waterproof phone case and spare memory cards.

Yachts often provide satellite Wi-Fi, but remote islands may have none: a local Telkomsel or XL Axiata SIM and offline maps help.
