Sustainability — Boat Builder Indonesia’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Our Commitment to Sustainability and Community Empowerment

The majesty of the Indonesian archipelago—its vibrant coral reefs, unique marine biodiversity, and rich coastal cultures—is the very reason our vessels exist. At Boat Builder Indonesia, we recognize that we have a profound responsibility to protect these natural and cultural treasures. Sustainability is not an afterthought; it is a core principle integrated into every stage of our design, construction, and operational philosophy. Our commitment extends beyond environmental protection to the economic and social well-being of the communities where we operate.

Responsible Sourcing and Construction

Our sustainability journey begins at our shipyard in South Sulawesi.

  • SVLK Certified Timber: We exclusively use timber that is verified under Indonesia’s national timber legality verification system (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu – SVLK). This ensures that our ironwood and teak come from legal, responsibly managed sources, combating illegal logging and promoting sustainable forestry.
  • Waste Minimization: Our shipyard employs strict waste management protocols. Wood offcuts are repurposed by local communities for crafts or fuel, and we have systems in place to prevent paints, solvents, and other contaminants from polluting the surrounding land and sea.
  • Low-Impact Construction: We prioritize traditional building techniques that are less energy-intensive. By combining hand-tool craftsmanship with modern efficiency, we reduce the overall carbon footprint of the construction process.

Designing for a Cleaner Ocean

We build our Phinisi yachts to be guardians of the pristine waters they sail.

  • Advanced Wastewater Treatment: Every vessel is equipped with a state-of-the-art marine sanitation device (MSD) that treats black and grey water to a standard far exceeding the minimum requirements set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) MARPOL convention. This prevents any harmful discharge into sensitive marine environments like Komodo National Park or Raja Ampat.
  • Fuel Efficiency and Emissions Reduction: We specify modern, fuel-efficient diesel engines that meet strict emissions standards (IMO Tier II/III). We also conduct hydrodynamic analysis during the design phase to optimize hull shape for reduced drag and lower fuel consumption.
  • Elimination of Single-Use Plastics: We design our vessels to be free of single-use plastics. This includes installing high-capacity watermakers and purification systems to eliminate the need for plastic water bottles, and designing galley and service protocols around reusable containers.
  • Carbon Offset Programs: For every vessel launched, we partner with an accredited Indonesian organization to fund a carbon offset project, such as mangrove reforestation or renewable energy initiatives, to offset the estimated carbon footprint of the vessel’s first year of operation.

Empowering Local Communities

Our connection to the people of South Sulawesi is the foundation of our company.

  • Local Employment and Apprenticeships: Over 85% of our shipyard workforce is hired from the local communities of Tana Beru and Bira. We run an apprenticeship program to train the next generation of Panrita Lopi, ensuring this vital cultural heritage is passed down and remains a viable, respected profession.
  • Community Development Fund: A percentage of our profits is dedicated to a community fund managed in partnership with local village leaders. This fund supports local education by providing resources for schools and scholarships for promising students.
  • Supporting Traditional Crafts: We commission local artisans for elements of our interior decor, such as hand-woven textiles (ikat) and traditional carvings, providing a sustainable source of income and preserving these art forms.

Our vision is to build the finest Phinisi yachts in the world—vessels that not only represent the pinnacle of Indonesian craftsmanship but also serve as a model for responsible and sustainable tourism. This holistic approach is fundamental to our identity as the leading boat builder in Indonesia.
